In Microsoft Excel 2007, what formula would I use to make a symbol equal a number?

I am using the List in Data Validation for an evaluation checklist and using checkmarks for each item. I want to link the total amount of checkmarks for each section into another tab in spreadsheet. Is there any way to total the amount of checkmarks for each section and have the amount show in a numerical value? Thanks!
