How come when I print from a website, it comes out in symbols?

When I print directly from a website, it comes out in symbols rather than in English. I don't know why it is like this. When I go to "print preview," the page I am printing is all in English, but when it actually comes out in the printer is just random symbols. Printing from Microsoft Word, however, is perfectly fine. My computer is Windows XP and printer is Compaq A1000 and the character encoding for the internet is Unicode (UTF-8).
