My cat is starting to get ! How can I keep him from misbehaving from a young age?

He is just getting to be almost a year old. First he's been, clawing all the toilet paper rolls, now he's up to getting on counters and the fridge to destroy and knock off everything. He even eats all my bread! My worst fear is he will learn to scratch at the bedroom door in the middle of the night. His sister is not at all yet and it doesn't seem she'll ever be. He beats on her too! Declawing them is not an option, how can I be sure their behavior is appropriate from a young age? And why, suddenly, within the past 2 weeks, did this behavior start?
